The Hawkeyes women’s basketball team is now honored with a dedicated day recognizing their achievements, having secured consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament’s championship game. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds officially proclaimed Monday, April 22, 2024, as Iowa Hawkeyes Women’s Basketball Appreciation Day across the state, announcing it through a social media video on Monday morning.
Reynolds highlighted the team’s widespread appeal, drawing admiration from loyal Hawkeyes supporters to prominent figures in Hollywood. She emphasized their undeniable charisma and praised them for exemplifying the finest qualities of Iowa.
For the second consecutive year, Iowa’s women’s team clinched victory in the Big Ten tournament and reached the finals of the NCAA Tournament. However, they narrowly missed the championship this season, losing in the final game against South Carolina.
Additionally, Feb. 22 was designated as Caitlin Clark Day in Iowa this year, honoring her achievement in breaking the NCAA women’s scoring record. Governor Reynolds extended her congratulations to the coaching staff and the entire team for their hard work throughout the year.
Addressing the players individually, Reynolds acknowledged Caitlin, Kate, Gabbie, Hannah, Molly, Taylor, Sydney, Kylie, Kennise, Jayda, AJ, Ava, Sharon, and Addison for their transformative impact on women’s basketball. She emphasized how they have served as inspirations for young girls and boys to pursue their dreams with determination and belief, ultimately exemplifying what it truly means to be champions.
